Dr. Jean Philippe Vielle Calzada

We seek the elucidation of the (epi) genetic basis and molecular mechanisms that control gamete and seed formation in plants, as well as understanding the origin and domestication of crops through the structural, functional and evolutionary analysis of ancient and extant genomes. We are particularly interested in understanding and controlling apomixis, a natural method of clonal reproduction through seeds with wide potential for smallholder farming, as well as the evolutionary processes that shaped the emergence of Mesoamerican crops through the combined action of human selection and environmental factors. We seek to generate top-ranked discoveries by training high-performance young scientists capable of competing at the international level.
